What is Quinoa?
Quinoa [Chenopodium quinoa willd] has been enjoyed as an important food crop in the Andes for more than 6,000 years. More precious than gold, this powerhouse grain has now been rediscovered by the world marketplace because of its’ delicious flavor and high nutritional value. Classified as a ‘super crop’ by the United Nations for its’ high protein content, quinoa contains a balanced set of essential amino acids, making it an unusually complete food.
Quinoa has been selected by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations as one of the crops that will play an important role in ensuring food security around the world in the 21st century. The National Academy of Sciences of the United States has rated quinoa as the most nourishing grain in the world.
Grown only in the Bolivian Andes, at an altitude of 13,000 feet, Royal Quinoa, which is the particular variety used in Andean Dream products, is the finest quality quinoa in the world. Royal Quinoa has larger seeds which contain more protein and amino acids than other varieties.
We’ve spun this healthy, golden grain into our Andean Dream Quinoa Cookies. The five flavors are all gluten free, and do not contain any dairy products, eggs, soy, corn or nuts. We have individually packed our cookies for you in a convenient single serving packet, fully recyclable. Perfect to grab for a quick snack, and for school lunches and backpacks!
Andean Dream Pasta contains 24 grams of protein and 21 amino acids in an 8 oz. box. Our pasta cooks to an excellent flavor and texture, never mushy. Especially easy to cook, it can be enjoyed year-round because it is versatile and light. Andean Dream Quinoa pasta is not only gluten free, but is also organic, and kosher. It is also completely corn and soy free.
Andean Dream was founded by Ingrid Hirstin Lazcano, a Los Angeles businesswoman, through the inspiration of her husband Fernando, a former Bolivian career diplomat.
Ingrid learned of the benefits of quinoa first-hand while working on a public relations campaign in 2005 with a research scientist and author who specialized in improving health through eating alkaline-rich foods. Intrigued by quinoa, she started eating the grain on a regular basis and noticed a significant increase in energy and a true feeling of well-being. This sparked her desire to create a line of products to share the benefits of this unique super food with U.S. consumers.
In 2006 Ingrid traveled to Bolivia to locate the world’s finest quinoa. High in the Bolivian Andes she found Royal Quinoa, which is prized over other quinoa varieties for its high protein and amino acid content. She quickly established a business relationship with Andean Valley, Bolivia’s largest exporter of organic Royal Quinoa, whose programs help create sustainable family businesses for the indigenous farmers of Royal Quinoa.
In 2006 the first Andean Dream cookies were introduced in Whole Foods Markets, and then, in 2008, Andean Dream launched its line of quinoa pastas.
I was sent the Andean Dream Quinoa cookies in the flavors Coffee, Coconut, and Chocolate chip. I was also sent the Quinoa spaghetti and macaroni. I asked my cousin Amanda, who was recently diagnosed with Celiacs Disease to help me try the Coconut cookies, spaghetti, and macaroni pasta. Here are thoughts on the products :
“I’ll start with the Andean Dream Quinoa Cookies. I had never had a quinoa cookie but I really liked them and Quinton did too! The first thing i noticed when I opened the box was that the cookies are individually wrapped and I loved that! Perfect for on the go and tossing in my purse or diaper bag. They are coconut cookies and I loved the flavor! Coconut is one of my favorites. They are a crunchy cookie that to me, remind me of a mix between a shortbread cookie and a macaroon. Overall I think these cookies are great for people who are gluten free (or anyone really) and wanting something sweet or a quick snack. I love the fact that they are organic also!
Now for the Andean Dream Quinoa Pasta. I am very familiar with gluten free pasta, it is one of my favorite meals since finding out I have to be gluten free. I have tried rice and corn pasta but had never tried quinoa pasta, this brand was made with rice flour and quinoa flour. I am a big fan of eating pasta with nothing but butter so I thought that would be a great way to try it first and I really liked it! It had a nice neutral flavor and a texture much like rice pasta which reminds me of the texture of whole wheat pasta. After I tried it with butter I made a gluten free version of chicken parmesan and the pasta was delicious! So I would give this pasta an A+. I love that they are an organic product!”
I was so happy to be able to share those products with her! My kids and I tried the Chocolate Chip cookies and the Coffee Cookies, which we thought were quite tasty, and also loved that they were individually wrapped! So convenient! Our favorite was the Coffee flavor! Mmm…Delicious!! The kids and I could not get enough of these cookies, and had the entire box eaten in record time! 😉 I might add that the chocolate chip is pretty close to being gone as well, they were my husband’s favorite, and he was completely shocked when I told him what they were made from…seriously, the guy was amazed! They also offer Orange Essence, Cocoa Orange, and Raisins and Spice cookies and I am absolutely sure they are equally amazing! Aside from the cookies, spaghetti, and macaroni, Andean dream also has a wide variety of other products such as Quinoa Fusilli and Quinoa Shells and all are Gluten Free, Organic, Kosher and Corn Free and made only with Organic Royal Quinoa and Rice Flour. They also offer Quinoa Soup in Vegetarian Quinoa Noodle Soup and Tomato Quinoa Noodle Soup, which I personally cannot wait to try! ( nor can my amazed husband! )
I would recommend these products to anyone who is searching for gluten free foods, vegans, or just anyone looking for an amazingly natural healthy treat! Yum Yum!
