Around our house we recycle…and I don’t just mean we set our recyclables outside on the curb, I mean we actively craft and recycle objects into new purposeful objects. We Upcycle! We make notebooks out of cereal boxes, we turn milk jugs into functional funnels, piggy banks, bird feeders, we haul water to our animals in them, we sew fun pouches out of plastic feed sacks…the list could go on and on. We reuse everything we can, and give new life to almost everything…so when I heard that TerraCycle was doing the same only on a larger scale I was super excited to check out them out. I had actually purchased a pencil pouch from them several years ago ( that I still currently use ), but somehow I missed the fact that there was a whole movement behind the pouch! ( I am shaking my head at myself for this, believe me! )

“Founded in 2001 by Tom Szaky, then a 20-year-old Princeton University freshman, TerraCycle, Inc. began producing organic fertilizer by packaging liquified “worm poop” in used soda bottles. Since the inauspicious start, TerraCycle has become one of the fastest-growing green companies in the world.

More than just a recycling company, TerraCycle strives to be a driving force behind increasing environmental awareness and action. Our goal is to be a trusted resource for families, schools, communities, and even corporations to find tips, stats, facts, tactics, and news to help them live a greener, cleaner lifestyle. Together, we are Eliminating the Idea of Waste®.

Today, TerraCycle is a highly-awarded, international upcycling and recycling company that collects difficult-to-recycle packaging and products and repurposes the material into affordable, innovative products. TerraCycle is widely considered the world’s leader in the collection and reuse of non-recyclable, post-consumer waste.

TerraCycle works with more than 100 major brands in the U.S. and 22 countries overseas to collect used packaging and products that would otherwise be destined for landfills. It repurposes that waste into new, innovative materials and products that are available online and through major retailers.”

These products keep waste out of our landfills and contribute to a cleaner world. TerraCycle products are available at a wide range of major retailers from Wal*Mart to Target as well as online.

What is the impact of throwing away my garbage?

Garbage that is thrown out goes to a landfill or incinerator, where it will release carbon emissions  that have a negative impact on the environment. Landfilled garbage also takes up limited space on the earth and produces other side effects like leaching toxins into the soil and groundwater.

Garbage that is recycled goes to a processing plant and is converted into new raw materials to make new products. This not only eliminates the negative effects of landfilling/incinerating it, but processing garbage into new raw material releases fewer emissions that producing new (“virgin”) materials.

Why are some materials non-recyclable?

Technically, “non-recyclable” materials can be recycled. However, these materials must be collected, sorted and processes differently than what we consider traditionally recyclable materials, which are really just the most easily recyclable materials (glass, metal, paper and some plastic).

For example, plastics with either no plastic identifier number (like sandwich bags) or numbers 3-7 listed on them are not accepted at most recycling facilities since those facilities do not have the infrastructure to recycle them. These plastics sometimes have multiple layers of material or are a blend of different types of plastics that are hard to separate and therefore require different technologies that many municipalities do not have access to or the funds to acquire.
